Aromas of cocoa, vanilla, and baking spice give way to notes of ripe blackberry, boysenberry, and cassis. On the palate, the wine is robust, balancing rich fruit with hints of freshly turned earth. Softened in the cellar, layers of violet, black raspberry, and dark chocolate unfold, leading to a mouth-coating, rich finish shaped by fine-grained, luxurious tannins.

Grapes for this complex wine come from three special blocks of vines grown in the renowned Vine Hill Ranch in Napa Valley’s western benchlands near Oakville. Oakville’s mornings are cool and foggy, but as the sun rises, the fog burns off resulting in warm, dry afternoons. The benchlands offer deep loamy soils and shade from the mountains to protect grapes from extreme heat and sun. These mature vines produce powerful, intense wines in these perfect conditions, with beautiful varietal expression, and a well-balanced structure of acidity and tannin.
After several years of drought, we were happy to see ample rainfall in Napa Valley during the winter of 2017. Cool spring weather gave us ideal conditions for flowering and “berry set”—when each tiny flower turns into a young grape. Temperatures were moderate through the summer, for slow, even ripening. Toward harvest, the temperatures turned warmer, delivering small clusters with tremendous varietal character and balanced acidity.
