Dolores Cakebread co-founded the family winery in 1973 with Jack Cakebread and still inspires the culinary program and warm ambience of Cakebread Cellars today. A pioneering force in Napa Valley’s wine and food education culture, Dolores also co-founded the American Harvest Workshop, a 30+ year tradition at Cakebread Cellars that brings together top chefs, local farm purveyors, and media representatives to discuss wine, food, and a healthy lifestyle.
In the winery’s early years, Dolores and Jack continued to live and work in Oakland while spending their weekends in Napa Valley tending to the winery. Jack planted vineyards, and Dolores started the famous fruit and vegetable garden that still greets guests today.
Dolores’ other projects include the creation of two cookbooks with Culinary Director Brian Streeter: The Cakebread Cellars Napa Valley Cookbook: Wine and Recipes to Celebrate Every Season’s Harvest, a collection of recipes and wine pairings from the Cakebread kitchen; and The Cakebread Cellars American Harvest Cookbook (also in collaboration with Janet Fletcher) featuring recipes and wine pairings from the long-standing winery workshops.
Dolores has served as president of Les Dames d’Escoffier, San Francisco Chapter, and is a member of the Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, the International Association of Culinary Professionals and the San Francisco Professional Food Society. She is a graduate of the University of California Cooperative Master Gardeners Program.
