As nice as Cakebread's 1998 Syrah may be, this newer version is better yet. Less prone to overt gaminess than its predecessor, it shows rich oak spice and accents of clay-like earthiness to its very deep, optimally ripened blackberry-like fruit and has a fine, fleshy feel on the palate. So rich and outgoing that it impresses now, it finished with enough expected Syrah toughness that it will keep for four to six years.
