2007 Harvest Update

As of this writing (mid-August), everything is in place for a sterling 2007 harvest. A very dry winter and spring, with relatively warm temperatures, resulted in the vines flowering two to three weeks ahead of schedule, which augers for an early harvest, minimizing the risk of rain. Summer has been temperate – the past week, in fact, has been unusually cool – with only a handful of days reaching triple digits. Because the season to date has been so dry, there have been no pest or mildew problems, and the grape clusters and vine canopies are is pristine condition. Although cluster counts are normal, clusters weights are light due to small-sized berries, which typically pack more concentrated flavors.

"Parts of Napa Valley experienced some shatter during bloom," says Cakebread viticulturist Toby Halkovich. "That's when the grape flowers fall off the vine before 'setting' as berries. Shatter usually results in smaller clusters and a lighter crop, which speeds ripening and translates into wines with more intense flavors."

As usual, the first variety we’ll harvest is Sauvignon Blanc, with Pinot Noir, Merlot and Chardonnay following, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah bringing up the rear.

"Everything looks great right now," Toby enthuses. "Of course, Mother Nature can always throw a curveball in the form of early rains or a major heat wave, which would change the picture. However, if the weather continues as it has, 2007 could be an extraordinary year."

Our East Addition Opens!

We are delighted to report that the construction of our new barrel-aging cellar, complete with a state-of-the-art laboratory and three new tasting venues is complete. This 10,000 square-foot East Addition opened during the first few weeks of July and everyone here at Cakebread Cellars is very enthusiastic for what it adds to our operation and guest experience.

Each of the three new tasting areas provide up to 8 guests with an opportunity to sit down at a farm-house dining table and enjoy tastes of 5 current Cakebread Cellars selections. These added rooms offer an elegant; relaxed setting in which to look out over vines and Dolores’ relocated organic vegetable garden—which of course is in its full Fall glory. At Cakebread Cellars we value being able to share our wines, and history, in an intimate, personal setting so when you visit, you’ll be led by a tasting host in to an area of the winery for your tasting.

We’d love to have you visit, and in order to manage our guests’ experience, all tours and tastings must be booked in advance, and group sizes are limited. Please 800-588-0298 to book your tasting, tour, wine & food pairing or sensory evaluation program. Cheers!
